Tết is the most important holiday in Vietnamese culture celebrating the arrival of the new year.
During the weeks leading up to the holiday, Vietnamese will begin the process of preparing for the new year. This involves cleaning homes in meticulous detail and buying decorations/foodstuffs.
This time is also a very popular period for photos.
Today, I decided to head up to one of the bigger Aeon malls that I used to visit a lot in the past and have lunch with Van. The drive was pretty uneventful, however I did notice that traffic was very different. No one was running red lights anymore, and traffic was actually worse, haha. This is due to a recent change in penalties for breaking traffic laws. Something which I personally think Vietnam has needed for a while, and will greatly enhance road safety.
When I got to the mall, I noticed all the Tết decorations, music and even women dressed in the traditional Áo dài taking photos in the runup to the new year.
It’s as big, if not bigger than Christmas celebrations in the West predominantly.
I couldn’t help but join in the spirit and take a few photos myself 🙂
Expect to hear more about Tết soon…
