Twenty-two years ago, on the 2nd of January 2002, I embarked on a weekend adventure that remains etched in my memory. As part of my university placement year where I ended up in Malaysia, I found myself exploring the stunning island of Langkawi on a weekend getaway. Nestled in the Andaman Sea, Langkawi’s beauty left me breathless. The island was stunning, offering a peaceful retreat from my bustling work life just outside Kuala Lumpur.
One experience I’ve never forgotten and remember vividly was walking through the dense jungle along a narrow, winding road. The air was thick with the scent of tropical foliage, and I was surrounded by danger. But what made this walk unforgettable was the mischievous troupe of monkeys that decided to give chase!
It all started innocuously enough. I spotted a single monkey and stopped to take a photo, charmed by its curious gaze. Then, out of nowhere, more monkeys appeared, and I felt a sudden burst of uncertainty. Sensing the need to keep my distance, I turned and began to walk faster, but the troupe of monkeys followed me on the other side of the road, their eyes gleaming with mischief.
Ahead, I saw a line of taxis and a driver who began shouting at me. He was urging me to run! With a mix of excitement and alarm, I sprinted towards him, the monkeys hot on my heels. When I finally reached him safely, he cursed me and said I was crazy for walking through the jungle—it was dangerous, he explained with a laugh.
The weekend was a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. Langkawi’s pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and serene atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for relaxation.
Every moment spent on that island was special, a brief but impactful respite from my daily routine in Kuala Lumpur.
